The approach to the layout came from the clean, simple design often found in Art Galleries. I wanted to make the user feel as though they were exploring the artwork slowly, without unnecessary, distracting and over-designed elements found in typical artist portfolio’s. The basic text, stripped back layout left room for lots of white space, all of which makes the Artwork the focal-point of the site. Most of the text is isolated at the top of the page, acting as more of a directory rather than featuring a typical ‘menu’.
Contrasting the simple layout/colour/font, the site menu shown in the top left, features quick thumbnail illustrations by Kirsty to illustrate each page contents; Home, Gallery, Info, Contact and Store, as opposed to a typical text menu. This made the site feel somewhat personal, the clean design accompanies the artwork nicely, but this touch brought the artwork back into the interactive elements of the website. The menu is also draggable, adding another interactive aspect into the site.
The store is visually different in layout/colour/font of the rest of the site. I wanted to make it feel separate, like a store/gift shop would be in an Art Gallery. It maintains the stripped back approach, featuring only essential information about the piece, but uses a grey background to soften the appearance of the artworks.
After consistent contact throughout the process, updating the client on new design chages/ideas, the client was very happy with the final piece.
